Mick for MayorArts, Human Services & Recreation RecordHelped lead the campaign to create a permanent mill levy now adopted by the voters to fund services to seniors, environmental groups and non-profits that assist the less fortunate citizens in our county. Obtained a city grant, non-profit tax status and formed a corporation that enabled the former Big Brothers program to become The Buddy Program. This work was done in late 1980s before Mick became a county commissioner. Helped lead the campaign for the acquisition of the Red Brick Center for the Arts. Campaigned for the Wheeler Transfer Tax to support the renovation of the historic opera house. Campaigned for the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC). Guided the unification of the Nordic Trails System under the Open Space program this year, creating a single stable funding source for Nordic skiing and trails. Revived and directed the July 4 Five Mile Run under the Aspen Times (1981) and later transferred it to The Buddy Program as a fund-raising tool (1987). Founder and chair of the Rural Resort Region as an advocacy group on human service issues, immigration matters, housing and day care needs in Garfield, Pitkin, Lake, Eagle and Summit Counties. |
