Over the years Mick has led and/or ­participated in group efforts by citizens, elected officials and regional agencies to achieve common ­community goals in many areas.

Affordable Housing

Served on the housing board; supported and campaigned for the creation of the Real Estate Transfer Tax to fund ­housing efforts.

Twice helped lead the campaign to build Burlingame Village Affordable Housing.

Testified at the legislature for affordable housing legislation that would allow developers to designate additional units as deed restricted; advocated support for affordable housing through presentations throughout Colorado (Steamboat, Summit County, Vail, Denver, Carbondale, Grand Junction, University of Colorado, and in Lake Placid, New York and Ketchum,Idaho).

Joined BOCC efforts to change Aspen Village, Lazy Glen and Woody Creek mobile home parks from tenant space rent position to individual land ownership.

Transportation

Served almost a decade as the chair of the five-county ­Intermountain Regional Planning Commission for the State Transportation Advisory Committee and selected as the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies Citizen of the Year.

Supported and worked for acquisition of the Denver & Rio Grande Right of Way from Aspen to Glenwood Springs for valley-wide trails and future transit use.

Working regionally, lobbied for the state legislature's ­passage of the RTA (Rural Transportation Authority) enabling laws; helped lead campaigns to form the RFTA transit system with funding from the upper valley all the way to Rifle.

Aspen Roundabout completed on time and on budget through $4.8 Million reimbursement agreement from  CDOT and developer exactions (Highlands) and Hwy 82 four-lane/HOV construction from Basalt to Buttermilk ­including the $107 million Snowmass Canyon section and the $17 million Maroon Creek Bridge (completion Spring '08).

Supported the airport Master Plan improvements of $45 million over the past four years and increasing air service and carriers.

Environment and Land Use

Rural and remote zoning and transferable development rights were created to protect the backcountry and move development to more appropriate areas.

Chaired Land Use Code rewrites for neighborhood ­supported house size
limits, riparian area protection and ­impact fees for road impacts and
affordable housing BOCC authorized and voters approved the Open Space and Trails program.

Guided the unification of the Nordic Trails System under the Open Space
program to create a single stable funding source for Nordic skiing and
trails.

Supported comprehensive analysis of valley streams and ­testified in support of Recreational In-stream Channel ­Diversion for protection of kayaking, rafting and other stream uses by allowing those users to acquire water rights.

Arts, Human Services & Recreation

Helped organize efforts to renew Aspen's .45¢ Housing and Childcare Tax Helped lead the successful Helping from the Heart ­campaigns for funding of services to seniors, environmental groups and non-profits that assist the less fortunate and improve the day-to-day lives of all the citizens in our county.

Founder and chair of the Rural Resort Region, a five county advocacy group on human service issues, ­immigration ­matters, housing and day care needs.

Obtained a city grant, non-profit tax status and formed a corporation that enabled the former Big Brothers program to become The Buddy Program.

Revived and directed the July 4 Five Mile Run under the Aspen Times (1981) and later transferred it to The Buddy Program as a fund-raising tool
(1987).

Assisted citizen campaigns to create the Red Brick Arts and Recreation Center and to renew the Wheeler Opera House Real Estate Transfer Tax to pay for Wheeler ­maintenance, ­operations and to fund grants to community arts groups.
